Healy turned in the performance of a lifetime to become just the third Irish woman to break the four-minute barrier, however, it wasn't enough to qualify from a strong heat.
Ciara Mageean has safely qualified for Tuesday's 1500m World final, while Sarah Healy was left disappointed despite running the race of her life.
The second semi-final was a much quicker affair and Healy became just the third Irish woman in history to break the four minute mark after Sonia O'Sullivan and Mageean herself. However, that historic time of 3.59.68 was only good enough for an eighth placed finish behind, with Faith Kipyegon taking home the win in a time of 3.55.14.Diribe Welteji of Ethiopia finished second in 3.55.18 to book her place in the final.
"Definitely. Look, Faith is in a class of her own. I'm under no illusion that she's probably secured that gold," said Mageean.
