Devastated Brian Meagher, who was a prison officer in Mountjoy, suffered 17 entry and exit wounds among other severe injuries when he was shot multiple times and struck with shrapnel as he fought in Kharkiv last September.
An Irish hero who spent months in hospital fighting to overcome the severe injuries he suffered while fighting on the frontline in Ukraine was sacked when he tried to return to his job here.
“Our state has taken in over 100,000 Ukrainian people here, our politicians keep banging on about what we can do and what we are doing. While Brian was away, he had taken annual leave from his job and also had organised for his shifts to be covered. “When he was over there, he ended up training some of their soldiers and then he later fought for the International Legion for the Defence of Ukraine.“And he did this without any pay. He had annual leave from his job which he took and he also had organised for his shifts to be covered.”
The source added: “He had just returned to the country but still needed a lot of treatment to recover from the shocking injuries he had sustained. He wasn’t in any state to reply to it, he literally was not able to then.” It is alleged that he received no further contact until mid April, when he received a letter to say he was being given four weeks notice of his dismissal.
