Breaking down in tears, he tells ITV show Long Lost Family: “My world imploded. All of a sudden your whole life changes.

A man who was devastated aged 40 when he discovered he was adopted says tracking down his half siblings is the “best thing that’s ever happened” in his life.

You think, ‘Who am I?’. I was this person, but now I’m somebody totally different. It’s devastating.” They told him his birth mother’s name – Teresa Scully – and offered to pass on a letter to her. Bernard began writing to her in 1994. She was living in Philadelphia in the US at the time. She said in her first letter back: “I was very sorry I had to give you up, but I had no option... I think of you every day.”

In Monday’s episode, show co-host Davina McCall meets Patrick’s eldest daughter, Mandy Cox, 68. She was surprised when Bernard contacted her to say they might be half siblings, but as soon as she saw pictures of him, she thought: “It’s my brother. There’s no question.”
