Met Eireann cyclone warning as Ireland braced for washout August amid bleak weather forecast
Met Eireann has dismissed hopes of a warm weather return in August, saying current indications suggest that rain will persist for most of the month.
“Of course as we head toward late August, the usual increase in Atlantic tropical cyclone activity will bring further uncertainty into the extended range forecast,” the meteorological service cautioned. According to the US National Hurricane Centre, the first named storm typically forms in mid to late June, the first hurricane tends to form in early to mid-August, and the first major hurricane forms in late August or early September.Met Eireann issues monthly long-range forecasts that it says “can at times provide an insight into weather patterns in the month ahead.
Looking ahead to the beginning of August , the meteorological service said temperatures are signalled to be around normal while rainfall is likely to continue to be above average. The extended forecast for that week reads: “Confidence is reduced for Week 3 with no strong signal indicated over Ireland. A weak signal for high pressure to be displaced to the south supports a westerly or southwesterly airflow over the country. Slightly wetter than average conditions are indicated in the west and north while near to slightly drier than average conditions are signalled in the east and southeast. Temperatures will probably average out around normal for the time of year.
It comes as long-range weather maps, which are subject to change this far out, indicate that temperatures could rebound mid-August.Giving a day-by-day breakdown of what to expect, the meteorological agency said: “A dull, wet and misty morning on Saturday with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, heavy at times, with some surface flooding possible. The rain will be most persistent over the northern half of the country through the day with the best of the dry spells in southern parts later.
