Katie McCabe and interim manager Eileen Gleeson have paid an emotional tribute to all the unsung heroes who have made Saturday's history-making occasion possible.

This one is for all the mammies and daddies who have doubled up as taxi drivers and coaches, long before women’s football reached a point where 38,000 tickets could be shifted for a senior international match.

“It’s the volunteers at your local clubs, it’s the grassroots coaches that come out, it’s the referees when you’re 10 years old… you know what I mean, it’s everyone.“It's not just about us, it’s about every single person that’s played their part in women’s football the last 20, 30 years. Gleeson, the FAI’s head of women’s and girls’ football, is doubling up as interim boss while her employers search for Vera Pauw’s long-term replacement. She led Peamount United into the inaugural Women’s National League in 2011.

“Society has recognised that and it’s driven it forward, and women’s football is now the fastest growing sport in the world. Also, that is reflected in Ireland. Gleeson has more than played her part in that growth. So while the circumstances of her arrival in the dugout for this historic fixture - Pauw’s departure - might have split opinion, it’s fitting that she takes charge today.
