BA.2.86, or Pirola, has been found in numerous countries
The HSE is monitoring a variant of Covid-19 recently detected in the UK and other countries which has been called “notable” due to the high number of mutations in the strain.
The HSE confirmed in a statement to the Irish Mirror that the variant has not yet been detected in Ireland but added that they are monitoring the situation closely. “A small number of cases have been detected in Israel, Denmark, the USA and the UK. This variant is notable due to a high number of mutations.
“Working with international partners we will continue to review this new variant for any signs of increased transmissibility, increase clinical severity or immune evasion.”
