Disappointed flanker insists Ireland will bounce back despite the retirements of Johnny Sexton and Keith Earls

Josh van der Flier says Ireland believed they would win the World Cup but were undone by the mistakes they made against New Zealand in the quarter-final.

“Four years ago it wasn’t as heart-breaking at the end because it was a bit more of a convincing win," said van der Flier, comparing the feeling in defeat to the loss at the same stage to the same opponents at Japan 2019. "Yeah, it makes it more disappointing. There’s a lot of emotions going on but I’m very disappointed first of all.

Quizzed on Ireland's overall performance in the epic encounter, van der Flier pointed to the All Blacks winning key moments. "But that's the nature of these kinds of games, it's two teams putting a lot of pressure on each other and there are obviously going to be mistakes on both sides. But yeah, it's tough to be on the wrong side.
