Two men have been charged in connection with the seizure of over €150m worth of cocaine on a bulk cargo ship off the Cork coast earlier this week.
More than 2.2 tonnes of the drug were found on the MV Matthew which was seized on Wednesday and is being forensically examined at Cork port.The men had been winched to safety from a trawler off the Wexford coast after the vessel ran aground on a sandbank on Sunday night.
The men, from the UK and Ukraine, were detained under organised crime legislation and questioned at garda stations in Wexford. Following consultations with the Director of Public Prosecutions, they have been charged with conspiracy to import drugs offences.After the trawler ran aground, a joint operation involving An Garda Síochána, Customs and the Defence Forces boarded and seized the bulk cargo ship the MV Matthew off Cork.
The cocaine was discovered on board and five other men - from Iran, the Ukraine and the Netherlands - have since been arrested.
