The Labour Party has been campaigning for the introduction of a €9 monthly ‘climate ticket’ for unlimited use of public bus, rail and Luas services here to shift people away from using cars
The National Transport Authority has put the cost of introducing a German-style €9 monthly public transport ticket at up to €411 million.
The German government introduced the heavily discounted public transport ticket for three months last summer to reduce climate emissions. It reduced carbon emissions by an estimated 1.8 million tonnes but the German government replaced it with a €49 monthly public transport ticket due to the high cost.
