Garda Assistant Commissioner Angela Willis spoke after a massive meeting with almost 200 business owners from across Dublin city centre

Garda Assistant Commissioner Angela Willis insists the force will “win back that feeling of safety” in Dublin - as she met hundreds of “frustrated” business owners today.

“Yeah so I suppose there’s been some misinformation if you like about the presence of armed gardai on the streets,” she said when asked about a garda announcement yesterday which did state that an armed presence would “be deployed” as part of its policing plan. “They’re very highly trained and they are a huge support to the operational high visibility police on the ground,” she said.

Mr Anderson also said the atmosphere in the meeting, which was attended by members of the ‘Dublin Town’ group and senior gardai was “tense.” Mr Anderson also described the recent spate of incidents in the city and how it is affecting staff members - who he said are being mugged. “There’s lots of operations this and operations that. People are sick of hearing that and want operation permanent visibility.

“There was huge acknowledgement of the wonderful city that we have. We’ll certainly play our part in An Garda Siochana in making sure that people can feel safe in our city.
