Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said he has issued an invitation to patient advocacy groups to meet to discuss the controversy over unlicensed implants used in spinal surgeries in children.
He said there were four or five groups involved and he would meet them alongside Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly later this week.He said he wanted to acknowledge that"this is an issue of great concern for parents".
However, he rejected a call from People Before Profit-Solidarity TD Paul Murphy who called for a wider review of children's surgery.Mr Murphy said that he asked Mr Varadkar and the Minister Donnelly about the issue in July this year. He said Minister Donnelly was quoted in the media as saying that the first he knew about this issue was in August. He said this"scandal" was about a"governance process that would allow it to happen".
