Spain have won the Women’s World Cup for the first time in their history, beating England in the final.
The penalty save was just one moment in a stunning performance from Earps, who pulled off some outstanding saves during the match to keep England in the game.
At half time, Sarina Wiegman introduced Lauren James and Chloe Kelly to try and inject some potency into England’s attack, but Spain continued to control the game. The defeat is just England’s second in two years under Wiegman, and saw Spain get an element of revenge over the side that beat them in the quarter finals of the Euros last year.Spain’s win also marks an incredible turn around for a side that went into the tournament shrouded in controversy following a dispute between players and the Spanish football federation.
