In their first ever World Cup final appearance, Spain triumphed 1-0 over England to win their first World Cup in Australia.
The defeat is just England’s second in two years under Wiegman, and saw Spain get an element of revenge over the side that beat them in the quarter finals of the Euros last year.
Spain’s win also marks an incredible turn around for a side that went into the tournament shrouded in controversy.A dispute between players and the Spanish football federation had seen the side go into the World Cup without some of their best players, who had been frozen out of the Spanish set up after raising concerns over the training methods of coach Jorge Vilda.
Meanwhile, for England, and English football, the wait for a World Cup triumph goes on. Sarina Wiegman’s team will have to wait another four years until they can attempt to get their hands on the World Cup trophy for the first time.
