Will Smallbone was on the radar of Premier League side Sheffield United but the Saints have tied him to a new deal

Will Smallbone has ended speculation over his future by signing a new long-term deal with Southampton.

Smallbone, 23, has been at Southampton since he was eight and made 18 first-team appearances before joining Stoke City on loan last season. Premier League Sheffield United were linked with a €8 million move before the transfer window shuts this weekend. And Smallbone, who should now be fit for Ireland’s Euro qualifiers against France and Netherlands, said: “It's been in the works for a little while now.“And for me coming back, not being here last year, coming back and seeing the change and everything that's happened has been a breath of fresh air.

“That has only grown since I've come back, that belief and positivity in the side and myself, I've really enjoyed it.”
