Holly Cairns became leader of the Social Democrats party in March, after being elected four years ago - she chats to RSVP Live about housing, health, and being from Cork
Holly Cairns’ rise in politics has been nothing short of meteoric. She was elected to Cork County Council back in 2019.
Read more: Holly Cairns TD on advice, what frightens her, guilty pleasures and life as a female politicianShe is a bit of an outlier when it comes to political party leaders in Ireland - most hail from Dublin or other urban areas and have been involved in politics from a young age. Her career before politics also shaped her policies - she previously worked abroad in disability services. In general, services abroad are much better funded and run than their Irish counterparts, according to Holly. “They are pathetic here in comparison. It’s really ruining people’s lives.”
She credits the marriage equality referendum in 2015 with kickstarting her interest in politics. She also campaigned heavily for a ‘yes’ vote in abortion referendum, calling to houses in her local area to convince people to vote for change. Holly believes we are on the cusp of change in Ireland, as people are growing fed up with inaction on housing and healthcare. “There is an uprising of dissatisfaction, I hope this translates to people getting out and knocking on doors, that is how we change it. We are not going to change it by having the same government again.
In relation to becoming leader of the Social Democrats party, Holly reveals that it was quite an emotional time when the former co-leaders, Róisín Shorthall and Catherine Murphy, stepped down.
