A week before the Government unveils Budget 2024, Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald and Finance spokesman Pearse Doherty unveiled the party's alternative budget.

The Sinn Féin alternative budget is aimed at “anybody who needs a house” and will resonate most with young people, Mary Lou McDonald has said.

It would not proceed with the planned excise duty reversal that is expected at the end of this month, while also extending the reduced VAT rate for electricity and gas and reducing excise duty for home heating oil. The cost of living package will also contain a number of lump sum payments, including a double child benefit payment at Christmas, the traditional Christmas bonus for those in receipt of social welfare, a €400 lump sum payment for Working Family Payment recipients and chose in receipts of Carers Allowance, a €150 lump sum for pensioners living alone and €500 lump sum for those on Disability Allowance.

Sinn Féin would not index tax bands to increase the entry point for paying the higher 40% rate of tax.As part of last year’s budget, the Government stated that middle-income earners were €800 better off.
