The decision of Luke Donald to award Lowry a captain's pick has not gone down well with some fans.
Shane Lowry has been selected for this year's Ryder Cup as one of captain Luke Donald's wildcard picks.The Irishman has struggled for form this year with his sole top-10 finish for 2023 coming at the Honda Classic in February.In total, Lowry has missed the cut on five occasions this season, the most recent of which came at the Czech Masters last month which brought an end to his hopes of qualifying automatically for Team Europe.
Lowry's brilliant performance at Whistling Straits in 2021 undoubtedly contributed to his selection. On that occasion, Lowry was one of the few bright sparks as Europe were thumped 19-9 by the USA. Despite his good showing last time out, many fans are unhappy that Lowry was selected over the likes of Adrian Meronk, who has won three times on the European Tour in a little over a year, with one of those wins coming at the Marco Simone Club which will host the Ryder Cup in three weeks.
"Picking Lowry with just one top-10 finish this year over Meronk, who won the Australian Open and the Italian Open at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, seems like a joke. Meronk was clearly robbed," said one X user.Another X believes Lowry is the European version of Justin Thomas, who was selected for the USA despite poor form, "Shane Lowry=Justin Thomas.""I would say Shane Lowry is very lucky to be in team with his recent form.
