A number of media personalities fear Tubs – who was informed of the decision late on Thursday – has been left 'haunted' by the events of recent weeks
Supporters of Ryan Tubridy have expressed concern for the broadcaster after he was publicly and abruptly dumped by RTE earlier this week.
Reacting to the announcement by RTE’s new director general Kevin Bakhurst, journalist and broadcaster Maia Dunphy claimed Mr Tubridy had been scapegoated."Poor governance and years of complacency among management in there has nothing to do with him. Feels like they wanted a head on a spike and that a recognisable one would work in their favour. It won’t."
"It’s hard enough to deal with problems like that when you’re a private citizen, but it’s 10 times more difficult when you’re in the public eye." Mr Yates told the Anton Savage show on Newstalk FM: "He walked away from the Late Late Show, which is fair enough, but he still had a contract. The Grant Thornton report dealt largely with issues related to the period 2017 to 2019. Had Mr Tubridy confined his remarks to this aspect of his case, he might be on his way back to RTE. However, in his statement responding to the report, Mr Tubridy said his "actual income" from RTE in 2020 and 2021 matched what the broadcaster originally published in its top-earner tables.
He added: "I believe RTE is technically insolvent. The borrowings are quite close to the ceiling of €100 million. Have you heard one proposal from Kevin Bakhurst or the board or anyone to say, ‘This is how we’re going to save’?
