She opens up about her children and family life
Rachel Allen is one of Ireland’s most successful TV chefs and food writers. But away from the glamour of those accolades she is a proud, but often worried, mother. Her eldest son Joshua, 23, competes in Mixed Martial Arts while Lucca, 20, is a race car driver. She tells RSVP : “I’m constantly praying to Dad to take care of them.” Behind the scenes her day job is in Ballymaloe Cookery School working with her mother-in-law Darina Allen and Rory O’Connell.
Yes! I worry a lot. I’m pathetic. There’s a lot of talking to Dad when Josh is having a fight. Actually, I like to call them competitions, not fights. My mum calls them competitions as well. I still haven’t been to one of Josh’s competitions because I feel like I wouldn’t be able to hold myself back. I would probably jump in and that wouldn’t be cool.
You’ve been doing sea swimming for a long time, even before it became trendy. What else do you do to look after your mind? We’re really busy there and that’s where I am most of the time. I just love it. There’s always a great atmosphere, I love the teaching and learning environment. I love meeting new people. Food is such a lovely thing to enjoy. We all have one thing in common: we all enjoy food.No. There are times where I’m really busy with work, but that just has to go on. I love my off-time as well. I’m so grateful that I enjoy my work.
