President Michael D Higgins convened the Council of State on Wednesday before referring the Bill to the Supreme Court on Friday.

President Michael D Higgins has referred a Government Bill on judicial appointments to have its constitutionality examined by the Supreme Court.

This bill, brought forward by Justice Minister Helen McEntee last year, intends to reform how judges are appointed to the courts. All appointments to any court in the State would be based on recommendations from a new Commission. The Government would choose a new appointment from a panel of three candidates put forward by the Commission.

While Mr Higgins previously convened the Council of State to discuss the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013 and the International Protection Bill 2015, this is the first time he has decided to send a bill to the Supreme Court for further examination.
