Community pharmacists around the country are preparing for the traditional jump in cases of headlice, and are on hand to assist parents in the annual battle against them

Headlice are a common issue for children of primary school age, and each year parents face a surge in headlice cases as children return back to school and mingle among themselves in close quarters again.

According to the HSE, head lice and nits live in both clean and unwashed hair and are usually spread through head-to-head contact.Tomás Conefrey of Conefrey’s CarePlus Pharmacy on Dublin’s Pearse Street is well used to parents seeking advice at this time of year: "The good news is that although the combing process can be time consuming, you don’t usually need to see a GP and your child doesn’t need to stay out of school”.
