The ex-Dublin footballer was less than impressed with Clifford's performance on Sunday

Dublin football legend Paul Flynn has broken his silence after he tweeted a controversial message regarding Kerry's David Clifford.

Clifford featured for Kerry in their defeat to Dublin in Sunday's All-Ireland football final and Flynn wasn't impressed by his performance. In a stinging criticism on Twitter, Flynn wrote, "Clifford was smoked against Dublin and poor against Tyrone yet still ppl think he is footballer of the year. Not for me - James Mc led Dublin to glory without having his best day yest! He’s a born winner and leader."This led to some furious responses from other Twitter users and a widespread backlash in the media with many defending the Kerry legend.

Flynn then took to Twitter to clarify his comments saying, "Bit of controversy re my last tweet; Do I think Mick Fitz got the better of Clifford? Yes Do I think Clifford was POTY? No Do I think he’s one of best in our generation? Yes - and top ambassador for game. No more midnight tweets". During Sunday's final, Clifford endured a poor afternoon and was largely contained by Dublin's Michael Fitzsimons. This oerformance is seen by many as having been the reason he missed out on the Footballer of the Year award which was instead awarded to Dublin's James McCarthy.
