'The majority of short-term lettings out there today in our rent pressure zones are actually breaking the law.'

A report has revealed a significant growth in Airbnb lettings in Dublin as the number of properties available to rent on the platform grew by 57% in the capital this past year, despite a ban on short-term letting.

In spite of Dublin City Council's city-wide ban on short-term letting, the practice has been sustained without detection.Sinn Féin's spokesperson on housing Eoin Ó Broin points to 2019 regulations which state that properties looking to engage in short-term letting for more than 90 days per year require planning permission in rent pressure zones, but that this is largely ignored by landlords.

He added that individuals renting properties on Airbnb are not the cause of Ireland's housing crisis, but that a long-term solution must be found. "But it's a separate issue altogether that at a time when we do need long-term rental stock as possible. Government needs to do a much better job to enforce the existing rules."
