Arsenal face Manchester City on Sunday in an early test of both side's title credentials, but the champions will arrive to the capital without influential Spanish midfielder Rodri
Mikel Arteta believes the stage is set for Declan Rice to step into the breach left by Rodri as Arsenal bid to slay Manchester City.
“But I am extremely pleased with Declan. He can occupy different positions but I think he has been really really good as a holding midfielder. And, yes, he has the qualities, the presence, the communication and the understanding to be a top, top player for us in that position. Arteta responded by spending £200million on three players - Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber who is currently injured. Keeper David Raya was also brought in on loan from Brentford with a view to a permanent deal.
As such, Arteta is keen for his players to stand up and be counted, in order to deny the most attractive and creative side in the country, the space to play. “For every game, you need the players to stand up and make it count,” he said. “Duels are a big thing in these games. It goes either way, one or the other.
