EXCLUSIVE: A rise in judges' salaries to pre-recession levels - and legislation that the President must be paid 10% more than the Chief Justice - means that Mr Higgins has to, by law, take full salary
President Michael D Higgins is no longer waiving part of his Presidential salary, the Irish Mirror can reveal.
This included the salary of the Chief Justice, which was reduced from €295,916 to €226,376. Legislation states that the President must be paid 10% more than the Chief Justice. The Government restored judges’ salaries to pre-recession rates in July 2022 under a reversal of the Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest legislation. There were further FEMPI increases in October 2022 and March 2023.A spokesman for President Higgins confirmed to the Irish Mirror that since October, the gap between the President’s actual salary and the Chief Justice’s salary is 10%.
“In recent years, as the FEMPI legislation has been unwound, the remuneration of the Chief Justice has increased and, therefore, there has been a corresponding reduction in the difference between that figure increased by 10% and the remuneration allocated to the President.
