This weekend, up to 10,000 people will trek the 764m to the top – some in their bare feet – to mark Reek Sunday
It may be a once-off bucket list climb for many, but five people scale Croagh Patrick every day in rain, hail or snow to ensure the pilgrim path is safe to use.
In 2020, local landowners, Mayo County Council, the Catholic Church and Mountaineering Ireland began a restoration project with €480,000 in Government funding. The Scottish footpath contractor said: “It probably takes us about an hour and a half to get up the mountain each morning and an hour to descend.
“The vegetation is already starting to recover down the mountain which is a success story in itself.” Matt said they are not trying to interfere in that – just help people get up and down without injury.
