He opened up about his adult kids and people who have left RTÉ recently in the May issue of RSVP
There are two things that make Marty Whelan’s eyes light up: his family and the Eurovision. He walked his daughter Jessica down the aisle when she married her beau Conor in a fabulous winter wedding and he’s not afraid to admit that he a shed a tear or two on the day. He tells RSVP : “It was nerve-racking, exciting and incredibly emotional.
I was very emotional. We’re a very close family so I was full of emotion. I was proud as punch because she looked beautiful. But I was also upset because I was like “Oh my God, I’m giving her away”. It was nerve-racking, exciting and incredibly emotional. It was an astonishing feeling and quite humbling. The guy she married, Conor, is an absolute gent, he’s very good to her and they’re very good together.
Listeners are very loyal and it’s a big turn around for them if you’re suddenly not there. It’s odd that they both stepped back to the extent that they did. I know they’re both still working in RTÉ but they’re not regularly on the airwaves and they were on five days a week when I started. I’m the only one left who is on five days a week and I’ve no intentions of stopping because I love it.
It was very funny, I was reading the paper on air and I suddenly saw my name. It was very kind and she just listed out some of the things I do on the show and on Twitter. I went to see Peter Kay last month and a number of people came up to me and they were all in their 20s. They listen to the show. We’re very lucky to have bridged a gap and that’s a lovely feeling. We could have a caller who’s 80 years of age followed by a request for someone who has just turned 15. They’re both tuning in.
