Birmingham City's Lucy Quinn has emerged as one of Ireland's key players, but it's not that long ago that she seemed destined for international heartbreak.

Left out of the original squad for the double-header against the USA in April, in a window that would help shape Vera Pauw’s plans for her World Cup squad, things looked bleak for the Birmingham City forward.

But as Pauw discovered when, at the last minute, she changed her mind and drafted the 29-year-old into her squad for the US, what Quinn adds to the team is just as much a part of the jigsaw as Ireland’s star names. So strong was her performance that Quinn’s substitution at half-time in Perth against Canada came as a shock - even to her teammates who had returned to the pitch unaware that she had been replaced.

She goes down in the record books as the first woman to score an international goal at Lansdowne Road, old or new. “I’ve never taken any position for granted but when I didn’t make that one I was absolutely heartbroken,” she said.
