Exclusive: There has been a mixed reaction to the playing of an 'anti-IRA' anthem at the end of Ireland's Rugby World Cup win against South Africa
Limerick politician Willie O’Dea has said the late Cranberries singer Dolores O’Riordan would’ve been proud to hear her hit song, Zombie, being played at the Rugby World Cup.
Mr O’Dea told The Irish Mirror: "I think we were extremely proud to see it being played. We are all very proud down here of The Cranberries. I think the song is most appropriate. It's a beautiful song, it’s most appropriate that it should be played and that the crowd reacted very well to it. A source said: "Every nation has the opportunity to pick an entrance song and a celebratory song in the event of winning. The song has been played at provincial rugby grounds all the way through for the last number of years.
Keith Earls said after the match that the song has become a real Irish song now rather than a Limerick song."It just reminds us of good times really, whether it's Limerick winning All-Irelands, and it was played down in South Africa when we won the URC as well."I think the Limerick boys definitely set the standard with it and I suppose we're all jumping on ship now, thankfully because we're winning.
The attack, which took place in March 1993, killed two young boys at a time when the Irish band was touring in the UK.
