Justice Minister Helen McEntee has been slammed for going on a walkabout where an American tourist was attacked in central Dublin – and proclaiming the city was safe.
Ms McEntee was photographed with public expenditure minister Paschal Donohoe walking past the scene of the attack – accompanied by Commissioner Willis and local Chief Superintendent Patrick McMenamin. "I don't think what was any good for that was the Minister for Justice coming down Talbot Street in a circus-like performance flanked by two gardai and then telling us it’s safe."
Several councillors, including Daithi Doolan of Sinn Féin and Deirdre Heney of Fianna Fail, told the commissioner that they felt safe walking in the Talbot Street area – but acknowledged that other people didn’t.Richard Guiney, the chief executive of Dublin Town, a body that represents businesses in the area, said most people surveyed felt afraid on Talbot Street at night.
Meanwhile, speaking at The Curragh in Kildare yesterday, Tánaiste Micheál Martin stated that he believed that "broadly speaking", Dublin City Centre was a safe place. "People retire and so on. If we had the same throughput as we would have expected through Covid, but Covid interrupted that, we probably would have at least kept Even Steven in terms of some of the numbers.
