Irish troops will provide training in basic military skills including rifle training
Personnel has already been helping out with mine clearance, engineering, and combat medicine since earlier this year.
Tanaiste and Defence Minister Micheal Martin had previously said that the training would be in “non-lethal” areas. The training is being provided under the EU Military Assistance Mission Ukraine, an EU Common Security and Defence Policy mission to help fight Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia’s ambassador to Ireland Yuriy Filatov has accused Ireland of being a direct participant in the conflict for providing demining training.
They added: “Ireland’s policy of military neutrality is characterised by our non-participation in military alliances or common or mutual defence arrangements.
