It is important to do your research
With the rise of social media influencers, camera filters, and the acceleration of the anti-ageing industry, facial fillers have become more popular than ever. When reality TV star Kylie Jenner started filling her lips as a teen, this brought the non-surgical cosmetic procedure into the mainstream.
What are they used for? Anna Gunning is clinical director of The Laser and Skin Clinic – an award-winning group of aesthetic clinics with locations in Dublin, Mullingar and Athlone – and has been working in the medical aesthetics field for over 20 years. The Health Products Regulatory Authority monitors the safety and compliance of medical devices in Ireland after they are placed on the market. Reports can be submitted to the HPRA through its online system and the body advises anyone who has health concerns relating to dermal fillers to contact their GP.This is not the case with Botox, which is only available on prescription and can only be injected by a doctor or dentist.
Nurses, doctors and dentists are part of professional bodies, such as the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland and the Irish Medical Council. These bodies can hold medical professionals to account and ensure that their members stay up-to-date with the latest advice and techniques. Clinics that don’t do a consultation prior to treatment should be avoided. “I have had people come to me who have had previous work done and they don’t know what product was used,” Christina reveals.
Filler migration occurs when the filler moves from one part of the face and spreads. It can be caused by overusing fillers and poor injection placement. Extremely serious complications include vascular occlusion, which is a blockage in the blood vessels. This can lead to necrosis , scarring and even blindness.
Prof. Kelly says in the most recent edition of the Medical Journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, an article was written about the rising number of facial skin necrosis, blindness, and ischemic stroke cases plastic surgeons are seeing. These cases occur when the blood supply to the skin is stopped due to a compression and/or obstruction of the vessel with filler material, and/or a direct injury to the vessel due to the injection.
He would urge people thinking about getting filler to consult the Irish Association of Plastic Surgeons’ website for a directory of qualified consultants.Medical negligence Avril Scally, a partner at Lavelle Partners law firm who specialises in medical negligence cases, says fillers are a growing industry and there is a need for regulation to ensure standards are maintained at a high level.
“It is vital that you check that the person or clinic conducting the procedure has the appropriate insurance in place to cover any potential failings or negligence,” Avril continues. “If there is no insurance in place, it will be unlikely that you will recover any form of compensation if something goes wrong.”
When contacted for comment, the Attorney General’s office said the drafting of the legislation is continuing. However, until this legislation is passed, consumers must rely on “buyer beware” and their own best judgement.
