Several kingpins, whose crime networks are considered a serious global security threat, were arrested

More than a third of arrests in a worldwide crackdown on the notorious Black Axe crime gang were in Ireland, it emerged yesterday.

Search and arrest operations were carried out in counties Dublin, Clare, Laois, Meath, Limerick, Cork and Waterford. Officers claim they identified 800 so-called money mules here – but believe the real number is 4,000. It is also claimed it is involved in credit card fraud, tax fraud, advance payment scams and money laundering.

When gardai were alerted to the Irish connection, phones and other devices seized from people here contained evidence that the Irish-based suspects were effectively an Irish cell of the international Black Axe network.
