As the stage show comes to the Bord Gais Energy Theatre in Dublin, Siobhan O'Connor went along to rehearsals.
We all know the line: Nobody puts Baby in the corner. For a generation of us, Dirty Dancing was the soundtrack to our teens, the ultimate coming of age movie.
In the late 80s every teen girl dreamed of being Jennifer Grey as Baby Houseman and finding their real life Johnny, as played by Patrick Swayze.It’s a goosebump moment when Johnny takes Baby’s hand and guides her to the stage. Kira Malou, 28, who landed the role of Baby for the stage production, is observing and has the painstaking task of rewinding the song 100 times till we get the moves. Michael gets the class into three lines. We learn the step ball change which has me tripping over myself. I feel a bit like a deer in the headlights.Michael explains how we need to ease into the grind in a “sensual” way to peals of nervous laughter from the class.
“If you try to be sexy, you’re not going to look it. If you feel sexy in your body, you’re completely owning that energyI try to embrace the grind but I feel more like a middle-aged woman after a shot of tequila at a wedding than a sexy dancer.
