Huge drop in numbers paying TV licence in second week of July amid RTE scandal

It came following a 27% decrease in the number of people who paid the licence fee in the first week of July.

The number of people who paid the licence fee in the second week of July 2023 dropped by 31% compared to the same period last year, Media Minister Catherine Martin has confirmed.

Speaking at the Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin, the Green Party TD said that a decision on funding for RTÉ will be made after the summer. Minister Martin said that her opinion is that the drop in figures “likely reflect the public sentiment and immediacy at the height of its controversy, which I can understand”.

“I have been clear every time that I have spoken about the value of public service broadcasting to democracy and society.She said that she is assessing the future funding of media and “that will cover all areas of media”.
