Dr Colm Byrne says for every person who passes away 10 more suffer severe injuries

A doctor who’s seen first hand the devastation road traffic accidents cause has called for reduced speed limits, better enforcement and active travel infrastructure that stops Ireland’s mounting death toll.

"Some are very tragic cases... at best there is periods of long rehabilitation. For every one person who passes away on the roads there's 10 people who have severe injuries. He says Doctors for the Irish Environment are calling for a number of policy changes to reduce the number if collisions and fatalities on our roads.“We need to see a universal fixed 30 km/h zone in all urban areas - that needs to be the standard and then justification for going up instead of the current situation where it’s 50 km/h and justification for going down. Outside of that - a 50 km/h on rural roads.

Dr Byrne, who transports his children on a cargo bike, added: “I live in Naas and beside my kid’s school and creche, there are trucks overtaking me on the main street.“We also need better enforcement as well,” he added. “There need to be red light cameras, better traffic cameras and better enforcement of our road safety laws."
