With Budget 2024 just a week and a half away, negotiations with the Money Ministers will step up next week ahead of the big day on October 10

Budget 2024 is just over a week and a half away and while the finer details have yet to be concerned, we’re starting to see what the shape of the budget will look like.

When asked earlier this week if they had any updates on their own budget negotiations, one Minister told the Irish Mirror: “There’s a lot more blood, sweat and tears before there’s anything like white smoke”.We do, however, have a rough indication of what may be in store. The Government has been saying for months that they accept that they will have to give people some sort of support with energy bills this winter.

Given the tax package of €1.1bn is pretty much the same as last year, if similar changes are implemented, middle-income earners could be €800 better off a year.In a bid to put a Fianna Fáil stamp on the budget, Minister McGrath and Tánaiste Micheál Martin have indicated that the much-despised Universal Social Charge will be cut.

The €1.40 increase is pretty much guaranteed, with one Government source saying that “no minister has ever rejected the Low Pay Commission”.Following last year’s €12 increase in social welfare payments, those in receipt of the payments will be hoping for similar increases this year.
