Labour's Wexford TD Brendan Howlin served as Minister for Health, Minister for the Environment and Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform
Former Labour leader Brendan Howlin has confirmed that he will not contest the next general election.Within the Labour Party, he has served as Party Whip, Deputy Leader and Party Leader .Mr Howlin also served as Minister for Health from 1993 to 1994, Minister for the Environment from 1994 to 1997 and Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform from 2011 to 2016.
"I have been most fortunate to have held many public offices. I have been Leader and Deputy Leader of my party. I have served as a Cabinet Minister in three governments and witnessed the positive transformation of our country, both economically and culturally. I have had the opportunity to introduce into law many important and transformative pieces of legislation.
"Brendan has been at the heart of the Labour Party through many of the party’s defining eras and has contributed massively to improving Irish society. A life-long trade unionist who campaigned on progressive issues including marriage equality and abortion rights, long before they were popular, his commitment, strategic insight, wit and laser-like focus will be greatly missed from national politics.
