Christie, who was ratified at a county board meeting on Monday night, will have to source a new selector with Mostrim’s Michael Kenny stepping aside.

The former Dublin defender took over from Billy O’Loughlin last August and made an encouraging start as they claimed the O’Byrne Cup but they struggled badly in the League as they were relegated to Division Four.

They then lost at home to Offaly in the Leinster Championship though there was a small upturn in the Tailteann Cup, where they did enough to emerge from Group 3 thanks to a comfortable win over Wicklow but were well beaten by Down in the preliminary quarter-final. Christie, who was ratified at a county board meeting on Monday night, will have to source a new selector, however, with Mostrim’s Michael Kenny stepping aside, though James Glancy and Dessie Sloyne remain on board.

Prior to taking the Longford post, Christie had coached and managed in his native Ballymun Kickhams, as well as with Dublin underage teams and DCU, while he was part of Tipperary’s management team when they claimed a historic Munster title in 2020. Lifting the team out of Division Four in 2024 will be his primary aim, though Longford are set to lose one of their emerging talents with Dromard’s Matt Duffy, 19, being lined up to join AFL club Carlton.
