UEFA made the call on Wednesday to allow Russian teams at Under-17 level back onto international stage.
The FAI on Thursday reacted to UEFA’s decision to permit Russia to re-enter international football at Under-17 level by insisting that Ireland would not play against any team from Russia in any age group. No games can be played on Russian soil and teams would not be allowed to wear the national jersey, display their flag or play their anthem.
However, they will meet with growing resistance from national associations, with the FAI the latest body to object. The English FA yesterday issued a similar edict, while Ukrainian football authorities condemned the move by UEFA.UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said yesterday: "UEFA's continuing suspension against Russian adult teams reflects its commitment to take a stand against violence and aggression.“But by banning children from our competitions, we not only fail to recognise and uphold a fundamental right for their holistic development, but we directly discriminate against them.
