Recent garda figures show most murders in Ireland now have some domestic motivation, and Women’s Aid reports that most women are killed by current or former partners
Former State Pathologist Marie Cassidy has described the level of violence against women in Ireland as “shocking” and warned that it’s out of control.
“A lot of these people being killed are ordinary women, they’re mothers, they’re daughters, they’re sisters, what’s going on? “We’re all worried about the bogeyman, when it comes to women being killed it’s not the bogeyman, it’s somebody they know. She cites the murder of Dublin mum-of-three Noeleen Brennan who was killed by her partner of 21 years Derek Finlay, a recovering heroin addict and trained kick boxer.
Noeleen’s sister Tina said her sister was “always thin” and would have been “a little thing in his hands”. Mum-of-three Olivia, a playschool teacher and youth club volunteer, was found dead in her bed following a fire at her home.
