The retired cleric told how there were at least two people he met who could have become life partners, but he chose the priesthood instead

Former Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin has admitted he was once “close” to falling in love with a woman who he’s still in contact with.Asked if he was ever in love the 77-year-old said: “Close I would say, but again it was, and is, a mature relationship.

On celibacy he said: “I entered the seminary in 1962 and left in 1969 to a different Ireland, to a different church and different world.“We were never trained for celibacy, we didn’t talk about it, you were just cut from the world.“It can be very lonely and very frustrating. In the wake of the Ryan Report and Murphy Report being published in 2009 he said there were “a lot of priests who were very angry with me talking about this subject”.

“These were people that abused and abused. Obviously they are sick men as well but they are criminals.“I asked the guards to investigate one particular case where a boy had been abused by two priests to see if it was a sex ring and their conclusion was that it wasn’t.” The Ferns Report in 2005 documented over 100 allegations of child sexual abuse against 21 priests in the diocese - and found four bishops handled complaints badly.
