Monica Brown, 48, said she is 'falling apart' and visiting Ireland is the 'only thing keeping her going'
An Irish-American mom with terminal cancer is to fulfill her dying wish of taking her family to Ireland for the last time.
"I got a clear mammogram in June 2021 then in April 2022, I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer," Monica told IrishStar.com. "It went from nothing to something in less than a year. It was devastating. I was held steady for a while and was given a life expectancy of three to five years but once the cancer hit my liver, things accelerated.
"This trip is what's keeping me going. It's the only hope I have as far as something to look forward to because everything else is going to get worse from here on in. I'm only going to get sicker. I think about my trip to Ireland every day and am always coming up with plans. It's given me the hope I haven't had for so long."
Monica has only ventured to the Emerald Isle twice but vividly remembers her uncle bringing her to the farmhouse her dad grew up in, situated in Co Clare, where she plans to bring Bennie later this year. Her memory is hazier when it comes to Dublin, where her mom was reared, but she plans to put her stamp on it with her own family soon.
"I've talked to Bennie about Ireland since he was born. He's named after my dad, Benignus, who was St Patrick's right-hand man. He grew up around Irish accents as his grandparents used to watch him while I worked. When I realized there was a window of opportunity between treatments to go to Ireland, I had to take it."
