Military personnel onboard the MV Matthew with its cargo of €157m worth of cocaine, as it is escorted into Cobh in Cork by the Irish Navy.
They quickly took control of the ship and later gardaí and customs officials found 2.2 tonnes of cocaine on board – the largest drug bust in Irish history – valued at €157 million. As Irish Times crime and security correspondent Conor Gallagher, who had been following the movements of the ship long before it reached Cork, tells In the News the focus now for the Garda is questioning the ship’s captain and crew, the two men from the trawler and on finding the Irish link - which drug cartel was supposed to pick up its share of the cocaine off the ship via the trawler for distribution in the State where there is an insatiable demand for the drug.
