Politicians will today be told by doctors that new rules should be introduced to allow adults with a terminal prognosis of six months or less to seek help to end their life.
The Oireachtas committee on assisted dying will also hear from the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland, which opposes assisted dying as it is contrary to best medical practice.
The group says it represents 100 doctors in this country, and that in its view Ireland should take into account what it believes are changing approaches in Irish society - and changing legislation in other nations. Instead, the RCPI is expected to say that it promotes a considered and compassionate approach to caring for the needs and concerns of patients who may be approaching the end of their life due to their health conditions.
