Data given to Green Party TD Patrick Costello by Tánaiste and Defence Minister Micheál Martin showed that some 1,534 people were “discharged by purchase” between 2019 and January 2024.
Nearly 700 recruits have paid a fee to be “discharged” from the Defence Forces over the last five years, new data has shown.
In his response to Mr Costello, Mr Martin said that a “small percentage of recruits and apprentices will be required to pay a nominal fee for discharge by purchase”. Deputy Costello told the Irish Mirror that it appears the Defence Forces are having trouble retaining new people joining the force.
