Millions in US are under air quality alerts as hundreds of fires burn across Canada
President Joe Biden offered additional support to fight the fires, as the effects of the smoke blanketed some cities, forcing officials to urge residents to stay indoors.Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau has said the country is living through its “worst wildfire season” in recorded history, with more than 400 blazes across the country.
States across the east, including New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut, issued air quality alerts, with officials recommending that people limit outdoor activity. New York City had the worst air quality of any big city in the world on Wednesday, according to IQAir. “We recommend all New Yorkers limit outdoor activity to the greatest extent possible,” the mayor, Eric Adams, said.
The US Environmental Protection Agency said hazy skies, reduced visibility and the odour of burning wood are likely, and that the smoke will linger for a few days in northern states.
