David Moore, editor of Astronomy Ireland magazine, said the reason why there is a significant chance of seeing the Northern Lights in Ireland on September 23 is because of the way the earth will be tilted towards the sun during the equinox
Irish stargazers could be in for a scintillating celestial treat this Saturday as the September 23 equinox could arrive in style with an unforgettable display of the Northern Lights.
He said: "If the sun's very quiet that day, then we're not going to get the aurora, but even if there's a modest explosion on the sun during the equinox, it can lead to a display of the aurora. The equinox increases the chances, rather than guarantees you seeing it." Although upbeat about the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights on Saturday, Moore warned people not to get their hopes up as viewing the entire display depends on what the weather will be like.
