Brian and his husband Arthur Gourounlian open up on their journey to fatherhood, surrogacy , dealing with the backlash and the joy of baby Blake
The birth of their baby girl Blake Maria Rose via surrogacy last September was a dream come true for TV stars Brian Dowling and his husband Arthur Gourounlian. And while their journey to parenthood wasn’t easy or straightforward, one thing has remained constant: their love for their little family and their beautiful daughter.
You documented your journey for an RTÉ documentary, Brian and Arthur’s Very Modern Family , what was it like having the camera there throughout such a special journey? A: We just wanted to build a family. I was the one who wanted to adopt, I wasn’t even thinking about surrogacy, but that was getting hard because we were getting old and because we were gay. If we adopted we wouldn’t have been biologically attached but we would still have loved the child because they would have been family.
B: The subject of surrogacy is still very taboo and everyone has an opinion on it. Before Aoife was announced as the surrogate we were accused of taking advantage of a poor woman, a mentally challenged woman or a woman in a country where there’s no legislation. People’s assumption about surrogacy has always been dark and menacing and they see people like Aoife as a victim. This comes from other women.
A: We didn’t know where to start. We were in the darkness, we were in Ireland and there were no laws. We had to do it though because we were desperate to have a family.
