Rugby legend Brent Pope speaks out - 'I wanted to be part of RTE World Cup commentary'
Former rugby star Brent Pope has revealed his upset at not providing commentary for RTE for the upcoming Rugby World Cup.
But he assured he will still travel to France to watch the tournament favourites Ireland in their first two matches.Brent told the Irish Sunday Mirror: “I was put out to pasture... it was tough because I have a good understanding of the game coming from a player and coach background. “I have a good insight into all the teams and this will be the first World Cup I will not be involved in since 1987, either as a player or a pundit.
Brent told how he has been struggling with debilitating pain since 2021 which doctors have struggled to diagnose or treat. Brent said despite his years as a straight talking pundit in front of the cameras, he is actually a very shy person behind the scenes.Having spoken openly about living with anxiety and depression, Brent is supporting the Samaritans Elephant in the Room campaign encouraging people to open up about their mental health.
“The Samaritans saved my life. I called them 35 years ago when I was in a very dark place and there was no hope for me, as a desperate last measure.Brent qualified as a psychotherapist himself in order to better understand his condition. He said he is happy to see the approach to mental health in sport improving.“Back then, If you were strong physically then naturally it was seen that you could control the mental health side of it too, but that’s not always the case.
